With high-resolution mass spectrometry, the mass of an unknown compound can be determined, in such a high mass accuracy that a bruto formula (like e.g. C8H10O3N) can be calculated. Mass accuracy is usually < 1 ppm. Also large molecules like proteins and protein conjugates can be analyzed with this technique, providing an additional mass confirmation over SDS-PAGE or HP-SEC.
